Many parents run to the ER or Urgent Care as soon as their baby spikes a fever. Viruses hit and cause high fevers in infants and children but usually burn out within 72 hours. If your child ONLY has a fever with NO other symptoms use fever reducer as recommended by doctor, keep in light clothing, can give a lukewarm bath and give cold fluids to get the temperature down. If fever rises to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40°C) and you are unable to get it down within 30 minutes call your doctor.
A low-grade fever is less than 100.3 degrees Fahrenheit (37.9°C), moderate is 100.3-103 degrees (37.9-39.4°C) and high above 103 degrees (39.4°C). Remember to add one degree to your reading when taking your child’s temperature under the armpit. .
Give fever reducer Only as recommended on package or by doctor if under age 2. Use good hand washing at all times to prevent spreading virus to other family members.
IF your child has a fever AND other symptoms such as a cough, vomiting, pain etc. call your doctor.
A fever with pain of any type is always a concern and needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
