WHAT IS PILATES?

Let’s talk about Pilates today. What exactly is this exercise that is exploding in popularity around the world?

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates iPn the ealy 20th century. He called it “Contrololgy”. He originally developed it as a way to help injured athletes and dancers.  Pilates focuses on body alignment, core workout and improves posture, balance and body awarenss.  It increases muscle tone and flexibility and decreases stress.

Pilates exercises are rooted in calisthenics, yoga and ballet. It lengthens and stretches all of the major muscle groups in a balanced manner. It also increases muscular and postural strength.

Pilates is both aerobic and non-aerobic and requires concentration and focus.  You concentrate on your core center point as you go through the movements, breathing and rhythm exercises. It can be used with equipment or is mat-based.

People from all types of fitness levels and ages can benefit from Pilates as it can be customized to your needs.  Always consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program.
